Location:         Wagmatcook First Nation [WFN]

Reports to:      Manager of Operations, Culture & Heritage Centre

Term:             Full-time, 8-week term

 

Job Overview:

The Curator will work closely with various community stakeholders and external partners to ensure the knowledge transfer, preservation and promotion of Wagmatcook culture and heritage is developed and showcased authentically and in alignment with community values.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop an internal process and external plan that allows for the transfer of knowledge of elders and other knowledge keepers of Mi’kmaq history, language, culture and traditions.
  • Curate an inventory of cultural pieces in possession of Wagmatcook First Nation.
  • Identify opportunities to display and educate community members and visitors to the community of its historical and cultural significance.
  • Identify traditionalists to collaborate and mentor youth and cultivate capacity through the transfer of traditional knowledge.
  • Collaborate with Wagmatcook Elders Committee and stakeholders to develop projects and enhance the cultural components such as displays and artifacts in the Centre.
  • Facilitate workshops that allow knowledge keepers to share and transfer Mi’kmaq history, language and cultural practices, including but not limited to, communications, schedules and reports.
    • Conduct pre-event site assessments.
    • Support accessibility requirements for community members.
    • Ensure emergency considerations are addressed.
    • Provide information regarding post-event reports on attendance and feedback.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff members in event delivery.
  • Collect participant information for safety and reporting purposes.

Qualifications and Experience:

Skills & Competencies:

  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present information clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and events effectively.
  • Advanced proficiency in using technology for communication, data management, and reporting.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and social media.
  • Knowledge of Wagmatcook cultural protocols.
  • Positive role model, that represents the First Nation professionally and respectfully.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Must meet the eligibility criteria requirements of Canada Summer Jobs, applicants must be between ages 15–30.

 

Other Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license, ability to travel
  • Criminal record check with Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Ability to work flexible hours, evenings or weekends as required

Work Environment:

  • Office-based, with both indoor and outdoor work for events.
  • Ability to lift thirty-five (35) pounds and perform physical event setup tasks.
  • Exposure to weather conditions during outdoor events.
