    Wagmatcook Commercial Fishing

Wagmatcook’s Commercial Fishing division is the most important own source revenue business for the community. Commercial fishing is managed by the Commercial Fisheries Manager in collaboration with other senior managers to ensure the effective and efficient operations of the various fishing ventures.

Wagmatcook conducts commercial fishing activities in both the Scotia-Fundy and Gulf regions with crews operating out of seven ports. Wagmatcook holds fishing licences for snow crab, lobster, ground fish, and tuna. Wagmatcook community members receive mandatory training prior to being hired and assigned to a community owned vessel. The Commercial Fishing fleet includes six lobster boats, one ground fishing dragger, and a few lease hold vessels.

Commercial fishing also employs community members in fish processing plants and continues to encourage community members to apply for employment opportunities throughout the expanding fishery.

Wagmatcook Commercial Fishing ventures generates approximately 18% of the community’s total annual revenue which is used to pay for social housing, elders and youth programs, and other community benefits.
