Location:         Wagmatcook First Nation [WFN]

Department:   Prevention & Wellness

Reports to:      Prevention & Wellness Manager

Term:             Full-time, 8-week term

 

Job Overview:

The Elder Event Coordinator is responsible for planning and executing cultural events for Elders within the community. The Coordinator will work collaboratively across departments, incorporate cultural protocols, and promote community values and priorities.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate events that align to Mi’kmaq culture and traditions.
  • Plan, organize, and deliver small and mid-scale events.
  • Work closely and respectfully with Elders to determine what cultural and traditional experiences are preferred.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff members in event delivery.
  • Organize all event aspects, including but not limited to, communications, budgets, schedules and reports.
    • Coordinate logistics: venue, supplies, décor, audio/visual, and registration.
    • Conduct pre-event site assessments.
    • Support accessibility requirements for Elders and community members.
    • Ensure emergency considerations are addressed.
    • Prepare event budgets and monitor spending.
    • Track expenditures and inventory of supplies.
    • Prepare post-event reports on attendance, budget, and feedback.
  • Develop communications such as itineraries, agendas, resources, posters and/or signage.
    • Create culturally appropriate posters, flyers, website postings, and social media content.
    • Support department messaging and notices.
    • Promote attendance and participation across the community.
  • Research protocols of cultural events being held to ensure events follow appropriate cultural customs.
  • Identify knowledge keepers and create a contact list of those that provide services to Mi’kmaq communities.
  • Develop opportunities for Elders to connect with community members and share cultural and traditional knowledge and customs.

Qualifications and Experience:

Skills & Competencies:

  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present information clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and events effectively.
  • Advanced proficiency in using technology for communication, data management, and reporting.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and social media.
  • Knowledge of Wagmatcook cultural protocols.
  • Positive role model, that represents the First Nation professionally and respectfully.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Must meet the eligibility criteria requirements of Canada Summer Jobs, applicants must be between ages 15–30.

Other Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license, ability to travel
  • Criminal record check with Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Ability to work flexible hours, evenings or weekends as required

Work Environment:

  • Office-based, with both indoor and outdoor work for events.
  • Ability to lift thirty-five (35) pounds and perform physical event setup tasks.
  • Exposure to weather conditions during outdoor events.
