GOVERNANCE COORDINATOR

Location:         Wagmatcook First Nation [WFN]

Department:   Band Administration

Reports to:      Chief Executive Officer [CEO]

Term:             Full-time

 

Job Overview:

The Governance Coordinator will play a key role in supporting the Wagmatcook First Nation Band and Council’s strategic objectives. This role will be responsible for implementing and maintaining organizational certification requirements, managing stakeholder communications internally, developing and circulating community and staff newsletters, as well as organizing staff and community training and development initiatives. The Governance Coordinator will have strong organizational skills, well-developed and adaptable communication skills, both verbal and written, and will be detail oriented.

 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Communications and Newsletters:
  • Develop and support communication strategies to enhance transparency and engagement within the community.
  • Create and distribute newsletters, announcements, and other relevant materials to keep the community informed about ongoing initiatives and important updates.
  • Coordinate with various departments to collect relevant information for communication materials, such as manager reports.
  • Create and distribute a newsletter for internal circulation so that staff are aware and informed of upcoming organizational activities and successes.

 

  • Governance Administration and Support:
    • Provide support in the development, review, and implementation of governance policies and procedures.
    • Support management in the preparation and maintenance of governance related documents, including, but not limited to agendas, minutes, policies, agreements.
    • Attend Council meetings, as requested, to take accurate minutes for circulation.
    • Oversee projects with funding agreements and ensure reporting requirements are met.
    • Support program delivery in various areas such as Human Resources, or Housing Development.
    • Research and review relevant external policy updates and provide internal policy recommendations to CEO.
    • Provide administrative support to the CEO and Council on governance-related matters.
    • Create a document management process and maintain all Council and governance-related information and documentation accordingly.

 

  • Staff and Community Initiatives:
    • Identify training needs within the organization.
    • Organize and, when possible, deliver, training programs, workshops, and events to enhance the skills and knowledge of staff and community members.
    • Collaborate with external program providers and subject matter experts as required

 

  • Relationship Management:
    • Foster positive relationships with internal departments, Council, external stakeholders and partners, volunteers and community members.
    • Act as a liaison between the Governance Office and other departments within the organization.
    • Collaborate with external partners and organizations on governance-related initiatives.

 

  • Adhere to all Wagmatcook First Nation policies.
  • Adhere to all Occupational Health & Safety policies.
  • Report any incidents or near misses to the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Participate in training and safety programs.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Completion of a post-secondary training in a relevant field, or a minimum of five (5) years experience in a related field.
  • Knowledge of First Nations governance principles.
  • Previous experience in planning, project management, and policy development is an asset.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present information clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Advanced proficiency in using technology for communication, data management, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with community stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
