Job Overview
The Trail Labourer is responsible for assisting with the construction and maintenance of recreational trails to ensure they are safe, sustainable, and enjoyable for community use. This role involves physical outdoor work, operating tools and equipment, and following environmental best practices to protect natural ecosystems.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Build trails through clearing brush, staking trail markers, leveling the ground, spreading gravel and other materials.
  • Perform upkeep and repairs to existing trails, clearing brush and removing obstacles.
  • Safely use hand tools (shovels, saws, rakes) and power tools (chainsaws, brush cutters, compactors).
  • Participate in and follow all safety protocols, including wearing required PPE.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and supplies in good working order.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies, advising when supplies are low and need to be ordered.
  • Advise of any repairs or replacements required to tools and/or equipment.
  • Participate in professional development, training and safety programs.
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality, through proper handling of information and secure filing of documents.
  • Adhere to all Wagmatcook First Nation policies.
  • Adhere to all Occupational Health & Safety policies.
  • Report any incidents or near misses to the Manager of Housing & Public Works.

 

Qualifications and Experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • First aid training would be an asset.
  • Strong teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment with exposure to cold/hot, rain/sun and other weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to use landscaping tools and equipment safely.

Education and Experience

  • Previous experience in trail building, landscaping or outdoor labour work considered an asset.
  • Experience using hand and power tools safely.

Other Requirements

  • Due to the nature of the position, any candidates chosen for employment are required to undergo pre-employment drug and alcohol testing as outlined in the Wagmatcook Drug & Alcohol Policy. Employment will only proceed once a negative test result is returned.

Effort and Working Conditions

  • Physical environment: outdoor, physically demanding (standing, walking, lifting, stooping)
  • Exposure to weather, uneven terrain and insects.
  • Hours of Work: shift work, 8:00am – 4:00pm
  • Must be able to life up to fifty (50) lbs.
