Job Overview:

The Youth Recreation Worker will be required to develop and deliver recreation services, programs and educational opportunities for the youth of Wagmatcook First Nation. They will play a key role in supporting the implementation of the Mi’kmaw Physical Activity Leader’s (MPAL) comprehensive five (5) year community-wide plan from a youth perspective. The Youth Recreation Worker will have a passion for active living and hosting events and leadership opportunities for WFN children and youth.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop, plan, promote, implement and evaluate a variety of community-based recreation programs, such as, special events, camps and activities, ensuring that Mi’kmaw cultural and traditional practices are built into the programs.
  • Ensuring the safety of all program participants, providing safety information, administering first aid if required and responding to emergency situations as necessary.
  • Act as a resource for other programs within the community.
  • Complete grant and funding applications, submitting for approval and complete necessary documentation.
  • Create promotional information to be circulated, for example social media posts or flyers, on WFN pages or at community facilities.
  • Create a volunteer recruitment plan to lead and support programs.
  • Ensure participants have accurately completed required registration forms.
  • Remain current and informed on data and trends with respect to physical activity, practices, initiatives and supports; provide updates to the Prevention and Wellness department of any updates.
  • Maintain accurate records of work activities.
  • Prepare an annual work plan, complete regular post-event, camp, and other activity reports and present, as required.
  • Maintain program budgets, tracking expenses, revenue and provide reports to the Finance department, when requested.
  • Maintain positive and courteous interactions with participants, parents, youth, children, colleagues, service providers, business and organizations.
  • Provide information and upcoming event schedules for the WFN newsletter.
  • Participate in professional development, training and safety programs.
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality, through proper handling of information and secure filing of documents.
  • Adhere to all Wagmatcook First Nation policies.
  • Adhere to all Occupational Health & Safety policies.
  • Report any incidents or near misses to the Prevention Program Supervisor.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Post secondary education in Recreation, Education, Health & Wellness preferred, or a combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
  • Minimum one (1) year of relevant work experience with children/youth, recreation and planning.
  • Must be able to provide a Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse Registry and Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Must have a valid provincial driver’s license and have access to a vehicle.
  • Previous experience in a related field considered an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience with Mi’kmaq community life.
  • Ability to speak Mi’kmaq, preferred.
  • First Aid, Safe Food Handling and WHMIS training would be an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision and in team-oriented settings.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work with children, youth, parents of children and youth.
  • Must have a positive attitude and enjoy being active.
